Hackham Suburb Renaming – Approved

On April 6, 2023, the southern region of Hackham, was officially renamed ‘Onkaparinga Heights.’ This decision was made by the Planning Minister, Nick Champion, following careful consideration.
The decision was reached after consulting the Surveyor-General and actively engaging with the community through the Office of the Surveyor-General. This inclusive process involved discussions with affected landowners and neighbouring properties.
The proposal to alter the name of this specific area, situated between Main South and Piggott Range Roads, was initiated by YAS Property & Development with a vision for creating a new masterplanned community. Additionally, the new suburb name will encompass the existing residential land located north of Hepenstal Road within the Onkaparinga Views Estate. This expansion was endorsed due to strong support from local residents.
The primary objective behind this name change is to establish a clear distinction between the current industrial zoning and the ongoing and future residential developments in the area. Minister Champion had previously rezoned the region on February 28, 2023.
This rezoned territory, spanning 235 hectares across Hackham and Old Noarlunga, is set to facilitate the construction of over 2000 new homes. This strategic rezoning aims to address the rising demand for land and housing driven by population growth in the southern region of Adelaide.
Mayor Moira Were of the City of Onkaparinga acknowledged that the renaming of the suburb was a state government decision, but the council was pleased to see such strong support for the name change within the local community.
